Health Insurance Built For A Household Of One
If you're covering only yourself, you shouldn't have to wade through family plans to find your price. Individual ACA plans are priced on your income and your age alone — and most single filers qualify for a premium tax credit that brings the monthly cost down well below the sticker price.

Covering Just Yourself?
Individual plans are the right fit any time you're the only person on the policy. These are the situations we see most.
Self-Employed & 1099
No employer plan to fall back on. Your premiums may also be deductible on your return.
Turning 26
Aging off a parent's plan triggers a Special Enrollment Period — you get 60 days to pick your own.
Between Jobs
Losing job-based coverage also opens a Special Enrollment Period, and an ACA plan is usually far cheaper than COBRA.
Retired Before 65
Too young for Medicare. Individual ACA coverage bridges the gap without a medical exam.
Part-Time & Gig Work
Hours too low to qualify at work. Subsidies are based on income, so a lower income means a bigger credit.
Small Business Owner
Covering yourself first, before you're big enough for a group plan.
How Your Monthly Cost Is Calculated
Nobody pays the sticker price without checking first. Four things decide what you actually pay.
Your Household Size Is One
Premium tax credits are calculated against the federal poverty level for your household size. As a single filer, that threshold is the lowest there is — which is why the same income produces a different credit for you than it would for a family of four.
Your ZIP Sets The Benchmark
Your credit is pegged to the second-lowest-cost Silver plan sold in your county — the benchmark plan. Two people with identical incomes in different ZIPs can get very different credits.
Your Age Sets The Rate
ACA plans can only price on age, ZIP, tobacco use, and household size. Your medical history is not a factor, and you cannot be turned down or surcharged for a pre-existing condition.
You Pick The Metal Tier
The credit is a fixed dollar amount. Apply it to a Bronze plan and your premium drops the furthest; apply it to Gold and you trade premium for lower costs when you actually use care.
Eligibility and credit amounts are determined by the Marketplace based on the information in your application. Enter your ZIP to see the plans and pricing available to you.
Understand ACA Metal Levels & Find the Right Plan
The ACA created a four-tier system to help balance monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs, making it easier to choose a plan that fits your needs and budget.
